If you are into metal working, you have probably heard of the term deburring. Although the word seems very odd, it simply refers to finishing metal using specific techniques. For instance, if you want to create a piece of metal to be used as a fitting, that is designed to be a certain shape and size, you can mold the fitting, weld it together, or place it in a cast so that it can conform to a certain dimension. Once this is done, there will be many shavings and raised particles on the almost finished product which need to be removed. Different Ways To Deburr Metal

There are several different ways that you can remove the burrs off of metal, some of which are done by hand, and others that are accomplished using machinery. It just depends upon the type of metal you are working with, the parts that you are creating, and if you have the machinery available or not. For people that are running a smaller operation, manual deburring is usually done. However, if you are running a large corporation, and you have a factory that is producing different parts for a variety of professions, using mechanical solutions is your best bet for keeping up with production and demand.

Thermal Deburring

When you use what is called thermal deburring, you are using a machine that operates at a high temperature. This is obviously the most dangerous way to go about this, and when it is done, the entire operation must be isolated into a certain area where electric sparks or potential explosions can occur when interacting with oxygen. Despite the fact that this sounds dangerous, it’s actually the way that the deburring occurs. It is through the explosions at high temperatures that the burrs are removed.

Cryogenic Deburring

When you are working with plastic or rubber, this process is the complete opposite of thermal deburring as the products are actually frozen using liquid nitrogen. Although you can use liquid carbon dioxide or even dry ice, he needs to be done where these chemicals are safe and contained. Since the temperatures will reach less than 300° below zero, you need to have the proper room, equipment, and safety precautions set in place.

De Burring With Wet Blasting

Finally, there is deburring with wet blasting.the reason that this is the method of choice for many people is because it only uses water with abrasive that is driven at higher velocity. There is no static, dust, or imbedding of abrasive materials, just water and abrasive at high speeds that can successfully deburr the products you are working with. Although you could try any of the other methods, it really depends on the parts and material that you’re using in order to get the best result, something that de burring with wet blasting can accomplish.
