Ultrasonic cleaners have been used commercially since the 1950’s and clean parts using sound. The high frequency sound waves are generated by transducers located on the bottom of the machine.
Once the machine turns on, this create a multitude of tiny vacuum filled bubbles. When these bubbles burst, the liquid is propelled with enough energy to lift contaminants off your parts.
A benefit of a vapor honing machine is the ability to clean and degrease a part while effectively blasting it. The downside of this method is that the contaminants taken off of the parts while blasting shorten the lifespan of your abrasive and dirty the water, sometimes giving it a stench.
To mitigate this issue, an ultrasonic cleaner can be used to degrease your parts, before they enter your machine. Next, these should be used when vapor honing any and all engine components before the rebuilding begins to ensure all abrasive is free and clear of the part. The combination of ultrasonic cleaning and vapor blasting will make any part look and function like it did originally.
