We get a lot of questions about how to change out abrasive in a wet blast cabinet. Its is not a hard thing to do, in fact, it is quite simple.
Rinse
First thing you need to do is rinse off the inside of the cabinet. You will use the rinse nozzle and clean the inside of the cabinet top to bottom. That includes washing the windows, gloves, LED lightbars, and all the components that are inside.
Also, do not forget to rinse the drip pan too. It is important that you rinse thoroughly because you do not want to mix your new abrasive with the old. Our object for step one, is to have all the abrasive in the bottom of the hopper.
Drain
Secondly, you will need to drain the water from the cabinet into a bin or container. The container can be anything if it is a similar setup show in the video. The cabinet shown in the video shows two ball valves. The large one on the bottom is to drain your abrasive. The top ball valve is the drain valve where you will drain your water.
Let the water drain into a bin and let it fill up to the top. Do not forget to close the top valve of the bin because you want the media and water to settle before disposing it. After that, let the water sit for couple of minutes so the abrasive can settle to the bottom.
You will need to have an oil absorption cloth so that it can absorb any contaminate, such as oil and grease. That will allow you to dispose of the water without any regulation into a drain.
After letting the water sit for a couple of minutes in the bin, you can start disposing the water from the bin by draining the water out. Once the water stops draining you can close the valve from the bin and repeat.
You will repeat the draining process from the cabinet into the bin until you have no more water coming out. Then, you can open the bottom valve from the cabinet and drain your abrasive out. Make sure you also rinse the inside of the cabinet with fresh water and rinse the abrasive out through the bottom valve.
